Elegant suite of nesting tables dating from the early 1920s, with a restrained ebonized wood structure, enhanced by gilt elements, and  lacquered tops in rich shades of red and orange. The table tops are animated with figurative compositions drawing landscapes and singular motifs inspired by Asian aesthetics. Gilded floral details punctuate the ensemble, emphasizing the strict geometry of the base. This deliberately minimalist structure rests on four square-section legs, reinforcing the graphic presence of the tops. These stylized scenes fully reflect the spirit of the Atelier Martine, founded in 1911, created as a decorative laboratory bringing together multiple collaborators and encouraging a free, spontaneous approach to design while integrating numerous influences. The fascination with Asian arts, particularly lacquer, prints, and landscape compositions, plays a key role, sustaining a decorative vocabulary that blends deliberate naivety, craftsmanship and stylistic richness. This set illustrates the enthusiasm for Orientalism and the arts of the Far East that permeated the decorative arts in the early 20th century, widely disseminated by French workshops through pieces in which the minimalism of form serves as a support for a free and poetic decorative expression.
